BREAKS

Getting ready to leave campus for break?

COMMUNITIES STAY OPEN:

  • Fall Break
  • Thanksgiving Break
  • Spring Break

Fall Break, Thanksgiving, and Spring Break

During this time, residents may remain in their room for any portion of the break at no extra cost. There are no forms or paperwork that need to be completed to allow residents to stay. The residential communities are open and students’ card access is limited to only their hall and/or suite.

Winter Break

Residential communities CLOSE during Winter Break!

Each year, you’ll receive confirmation of our winter closing date. You’ll be expected to vacate your housing until spring opening.

As you plan your departure from campus, make sure you’re completing all steps on our Break Prep webpage.

During inspections, every residence hall room and apartment on campus will be entered for residence hall staff to check the general health and safety of the living spaces.

This will include checking for electrical hazards, fire safety issues, general cleanliness, and other policy violations such as alcohol, drugs, and weapons.

  • Students do not have to be present in their room during inspections.
  • It is important that all students keep their keys and student ID’s with them at all times during these weeks. Residence Life and Housing staff will always close and lock doors as we finish inspections.
  • Staff from Residence Life and Housing will communicate via email with students who have failed inspections.
  • During all processes, violations will be addressed with the appropriate charge and/or referral upon first documentation.
  • Please note, specific violations of the Guide to Community Living and any violations of the WFU Student Code of Conduct will be documented and result in an immediate response.

What are we looking for during inspections?

Maintenance Concerns

We’ll check for things like, but not limited to:

  • Personal belongings blocking vents or airflow
  • Damage to university property
  • Items that may need a work order
  • Missing university-provided furniture

Health & Safety Concerns

We’re focused on keeping your environment safe for you and your neighbors. That includes, but limited to, checking for:

  • Blocked exits or pathways
  • Unapproved bed risers or lofting of a bed
  • Flammable items or open flames (like candles or incense)
  • Plug-in air fresheners or unapproved extension cords
  • Appliances that aren’t allowed (like toaster ovens or dehumidifiers)
  • Propped-open doors, covered smoke detectors, or items hanging from the ceiling
  • E-scooters or e-bikes stored inside

Community Living Standard Concerns

We’ll also check for anything that might affect your experience or that of your neighbors. That includes, but limited to, checking for:

  • An unauthorized animal
  • Lounge furniture moved into rooms
  • Use of both sets of furniture in a shared space with only one occupant
  • Excessive trash
  • Signs of alcohol or drug violations
  • Stolen or unauthorized property (like university signs or parking cones)

If you are unsure about anything on this list or if something is a violation, we encourage you to review the Guide to Community Living and/or reach out to your community staff.
