Safety Tips

Don’t be an easy target for would-be robbers! Play it safe, don’t be sorry!

  • When you come and go from your property, and even when you are home, keep your doors and windows locked.
  • During the day, lower your shades or close the drapes on ground floor windows to prevent anyone from looking into your house or apartment.
  • Always report to the police any suspicious behavior or people in your neighborhood.
  • As the holidays approach and you make travel plans to head home or away from campus, visit your year-round neighbors and ask if they could keep an eye on your property for you.
  • Try to leave some lights on so the house looks lived in, since a lot of thefts tend to take place when students are away during break periods.
  • It is always a good idea to take your valuables with you if you plan on being away for the entire break periods.
  • Know who is on the other side of the door before you open it. Lock your windows.
  • Close blinds or curtains on your windows to discourage window peepers and thieves.
  • Trim shrubs and trees to discourage intruders.
  • Make sure your outdoor lights work.
  • Lock your bicycle or bring it inside.
  • Did the management or your landlord change the locks when the old tenants moved out?
  • Avoid walking alone at night, and if you do, stay in well-lit, open areas.
