January 2022 Parent/Family Updates

We hope you had a wonderful and restful holiday season! We’re kicking off the new year with a few reminders you may want to pass on as your student returns to campus and an outline of the housing selection process that will take place this spring.

North Carolina tends to see much of its winter weather during January and February – we encourage all residents to keep this in mind and keep windows closed to avoid pipes bursting and damage within residence halls. If your student lives in University-Sponsored apartments, encourage them to keep an eye on the forecast and make sure they are prepared (batteries, non-perishables, etc.) should they end up needing to stay off the roads for a day or two.

Should your student have questions about changing their current on-campus housing assignment (issues with a new or returning roommate, newfound concerns, etc.), encourage them to reach out to their hall staff. Their Community Director is a great resource and helps facilitate conversations ahead of any decisions about moving to a different location on-campus.

Believe it or not, it’s already time for your student to start planning for where they might want to live next year. Housing Selection, which has been on a delayed timeline the last few years due to COVID, is scheduled to take place during its usual timeframe in March this year.

You can see the important dates and deadlines below; of note, students can begin filling out their application on Tuesday, January 18.

For each class, this application has important implications: For rising sophomores, this is a good chance to start thinking early about roommate groups and the spaces they may want to live in. Rising juniors who may want to move off-campus ahead of their fulfillment of the University’s residency requirement can enter the off-campus lottery as part of the application. Finally, rising seniors who wish to remain in on-campus housing next year use the application to inform our office of their intent to stay versus move off-campus.

  • January 18: 2022-23 Academic Year Housing Application Opens including Off-Campus Lottery and Senior Intent
  • February 7:
    • Residential Engagement Community applications and block requests due.
    • Deadline for entering Off-Campus Lottery; outcomes will be communicated by Feb. 18
    • Deadline for seniors to express interest in living on-campus
  • March 21-24: Housing Selection for the 2022-23 Academic Year

Encourage your student to fill out their application as soon as possible and begin thinking about selection now – they might want to join or start a Residential Engagement Community or may need to update an accommodation request; those who are interested in moving off-campus before senior year should apply now, but not sign a lease or finalize plans to do so until they hear back from lottery outcomes on February 18. Our office is here to help plan and answer any questions that may arise as each student thinks through their options.

Finally, though it may feel far off now, we’ve included our closing dates below for your reference as you plan any necessary travel.

  • Saturday, May 7: Residential communities close @ 2 p.m. for non-seniors (unless approved for Interim Housing)
  • Monday, May 16: Commencement
    • Residential communities close  @ 7 p.m. for seniors
