Not at this time. The University asks students and families NOT to travel to our Winston-Salem campus to retrieve personal belongings. Access to campus is currently restricted to essential employees and those students approved to remain on-campus. Residence hall access is restricted to students approved to remain on-campus. Because of community spread of COVID-19 in Winston-Salem and the need for social distancing, North Carolina is under a stay-at-home order from March 27 to April 29.
Can I come to campus to move out or retrieve essential items?
When will you tell us how and when we will move out?
By April 30, we will give students an update on the plans for moving out of their residence hall rooms, retrieving cars in parking lots on campus, and/or securing personal items in other locations on campus. Given the rapidly changing public health situation, these plans will take time and may change; our goal in developing these plans is to keep our students, their families, and employees safe. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
Will there be an option to store my belongings at Wake if I can’t get there to claim them myself?
We are currently investigating what storage options may be available. Information about storage options will be included in the communication that is sent on or before April 30.
Would there be a charge to store my belongings at Wake if I can’t get there to claim them myself?
We do not have that information at this time. Information will be sent on or before April 30th.
Will there be an option to ship my belongings home to me?
We are currently investigating what shipping options may be available. Information about shipping options will be included in the communication that is sent on or before April 30.
Will you leave all my belongings in my room until the fall semester?
This is unlikely. Summer is the time when we traditionally service all residence hall rooms (clean fan coils, paint, do repairs, etc.) to prepare for students to have a good experience next academic year.
Will I have to live in the same room during the fall semester with the same roommate I have now?
We intend to have you select rooms for the 2020-2021 academic year. Details about housing selection will be forthcoming.
What if it would be difficult for me to return to move out?
We recognize that some students may not be able to return to campus to pack and move your belongings. We are investigating possible solutions, such as storage options, and information will be provided to students no later than April 30.
Could I have a friend/roommate/family member pack my room for me if I can’t get there?
It is too early in the process to know the answer to that question. One of the many challenges during this crisis is that we have to make decisions based on public health and when it is safe for people to return to campus. Until we have a sense of when that might be, we cannot announce definitive plans.
I have perishable items in my room. What will happen to them?
We are working on a plan with Facilities and Campus Services to empty trash cans in residence hall rooms, remove any perishable items (including perishable items in micro-fridges), and discard any obvious food waste. Residence Life and Housing will be sending students communication about plans to remove trash, perishable items, and food waste in the coming days.
